Starting the job hunt

Dedicated time and space is the most important element of any job search. We called in the professionals, Right Management job research consultants, to share their top tips on getting started...

Use online job boards...

  • Be selective. Go to sites with a good reputation (check the reviews) and which advertise the roles that interest you.
  • Include keywords e.g. location, industry, job title, experiences and achievements.
  • Update your CV at least once a month, this way there is more chance of it appearing in the top search results.
Track & feedback...

  • Get organised. Bookmark your favourite websites, set up alerts and create a spreadsheet so you can keep track of the roles you have applied for.
  • Ask for feedback so that your applications and interview technique improve.
Utilise social media...
  • Be safe online! Don’t give out personal details: email and telephone number should be enough.Track & feedback...

Utilise social media...
  • Be safe online! Don’t give out personal details: email and telephone number should be enough.
  • Connect with companies and industry experts. Some organisations are starting to advertise jobs this way too.
Have patience...
  • It’s competitive. You may well face disappointment before you are successful. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
  • Be social and keep trying. Take a temporary job to increase your skills and confidence in the meantime.
Hint: Be proactive – look at websites of companies you want to work for and make direct approaches. To give you a hook for speculative applications, use local and national news to find information about contracts or tenders that have recently been won.
